Welcome to Just Hurricane Lamps, your source for information, ideas and pictures of a beautiful variety of hurricane lamps and lanterns. We love the look and feel a hurricane lamp or group of them can bring to a home or an event.

With a wonderful sense of history and a presence other decorating items just don’t have, hurricane lamps and lanterns ooze style and chic. They can be chosen to suit a rustic cabin or a chic New York loft…they can be set in a corner niche to glow quietly, adding ambience subtly, or you could go for a huge statement with tall pillar candle holders or large wall sconces, or even candlestick hurricanes.

The simplest definition of a hurricane lamp is that of a light holder, most often made of glass but sometimes ceramic or other materials. The original idea was to protect a flame from winds of any strength, back before electricity had been harnessed. A candle or a well of oil or kerosene would be cradled safely inside the outer protective container, shielding it from winds and possibly rain as well. The idea of a hurricane lamp has expanded greatly over the years to include an absolutely spectacular array of beautiful options.

While traditionally, hurricane lamps and lanterns have been used to hold candles or contained an oil well and a wick, although many modern versions abound. Some contain new flameless candles; some are electric with a touchable base that easily turns them on and off; others contain lightbulbs, some of which are made to look like a candle flame!

Because of their versatility, hurricane lamps can fulfill a number of needs both inside the home (or hotel, or cottage…) and out, as mentioned above. They come in all shapes and sizes, and a variety of colors as well. As you may have noticed by now, we absolutely LOVE them and will be filling out this site with more and more ideas as time goes by.

Your opportunities for decorating and accessorizing with hurricane lamps are nearly endless! For instance, adorn your front door with elegant wall-mounted electric hurricane lantern sconces; string tiny hurricane lanterns with tea lights in your backyard for a garden party; dress a table with three different sizes of glass hurricane lamps with creamy candles inside.

Many lovely cultural variations of hurricane lamps exist as well. You can now find gorgeous oriental wooden or metal carved lanterns, rustic Spanish hurricane lanterns and bright Mexican colored outdoor lamps. Because of the staggering variety available, hurricane lamps are quite versatile and are widely used in decorating as well as for special occasions, for instance as wedding favors or to create ambience for a garden party.

There are also, of course, practical uses for hurricane lanterns. They are great for outdoor events and places such as camping, where you may have limited or no access to electricity. They are environmentally friendly, and are an excellent choice for places with regular storms and/or power outages. In groupings or strung up, they can light an entire room or backyard without the need for additional lighting.
